Vegan ‘Beef’ Rendang

This was a big hit with my family, so thought I’d share this! It may look a bit boring, but everyone who’s tried this says it’s very flavoursome๐Ÿ˜Š Some foods like stews are just not as photogenic as salads for instance. Our family is on a journey of increasing plant based foods in our diet for both health and environmental reasons. There are, however, a few foods that I miss, like Rendang which is an Indonesian spicy meat curry dish really popular here in the Netherlands! Now to my joy, I’ve discovered they sell pulled oats locally, which is a plant protein I used to only be able to find on visits to Finland. It’s finally available at my local supermarket here in the Netherlands! I was VERY excited to try to cook one of my favourite Indonesian dishes using pulled oats instead of beef. The consistency is fantastic, as it’s ‘shreddy’ like meat that has been stewed tender just like you’d have in Rendang.

The nutritional profile for pulled oats is very good and it suits my digestion much better than for instance Seitan which has gluten based protein, or Valess which has dairy in it. I unfortunately tend to have trouble with both gluten AND lactose, so this is partly why I was so pleased that pulled oats from Finland arrived in Holland. I do of course use a lot of pulses and various other veggies for protein in curries and chilis, but sometimes it’s nice to have the familiar ‘mouth feel’ of meat like we are used to in dishes like Rendang in which meat is the ‘star of the show’ ๐Ÿ˜Š Oh, and actually the pulled oats product I use is from nordic non-gmo oats and legumes. It has high levels of plant based protein, fibre and minerals and no additives or preservatives! In case you are curious the brand of pulled oats I found in my local grocery store is called ‘Gold & Green’. I should probably also mention that there are other health benefits in this recipe as well, the turmeric with black pepper helps reduce inflammation as do the ginger and garlic. I hope to write further about anti-inflammatory foods at some point, but today my focus is on this healthy plant-based recipe. Please remember to always add a large helping of vegetables to your plate even if you are cooking with plant based protein.

Ingredients

  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 4 -6 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 teaspoon of chilli powder/flakes (add according to the spiciness level desired)
  • 2 inches of a thick piece of fresh ginger grated or minced tiny
  • The grated zest of 1 organic lime
  • 1-2 teaspoons turmeric powder
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 400-600 ml of tinned coconut milk
  • 1-2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 packets of pulled oats (175 grams in a packet)
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar or coconut sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt (add less or more depending on the saltiness of your soy sauce, so be sure to TASTE!)

Method

  1. Sautรฉe chopped onions in the coconut oil until quite tender, then add minced garlic and minced/grated ginger and sautรฉe for another 30 seconds or or so. BE CAREFUL not to burn the garlic or it gets bitter!
  2. Then add all other seasoning into the onion, garlic & ginger mixture
  3. Now add the soy sauce and the pulled oats – sautรฉe another 1-2 mins
  4. Add the sugar and grated lime zest and just mix through briefly on the heat
  5. Finally add the tinned coconut milk
  6. Simmer gently under a lid for about 15-20 mins, remember to add water if the Rendang starts to dry out.

Serve with:

  • Brown rice
  • Oven roasted cauliflower and broccoli seasoned with ground coriander, garlic, turmeric, salt & pepper
  • Top with a generous squeeze of lime just before eating the Rendang
  • Sprinkle with chopped coriander (optional if you don’t like coriander/cilantro)

    1. Thanks for popping by ๐Ÿ˜Š It is very good as pulled oats absorb flavour from the curry or any other sauce you simmer it in. I popped onto your blog (looks very interesting btw) and noticed your in Belgium, so not too far from me! Perhaps you can find it in your supermarket too… It is still only recently available in NL at our Albert Heijn supermarket (big chain here). Let me know if you have luck and good luck with your endeavours to eat more plant-based too ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Oh I’ve never heard of Albert Heijn supermarkets. I’ll look up the French for ‘pulled oats’ – and I’m in the UK soon in the car ๐Ÿ˜Š so I’ll take a look over there and maybe pick up a bootfull ๐Ÿ˜Š Thanks for your reply – and again for the recipe – and for popping by my blog too ๐Ÿ˜Š

      2. Let me know if you find pulled oats in the UK!! Also, if you ever pop over to the Dutch side of the border you can easily find Albert Heijn as it’s one of the best known here. Having said that, I’m not sure this is stocked in all the shops. I live in the Amsterdam area and have easily found it here even in my local AH which is not that big ๐Ÿ˜Š Hope you have luck, but if not I’m sure you could try this with some other type of textured vegan protein if you are also trying to eat more plant based ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’•

I think you may actually find pulled outs in a grocery store if you live in the UK, as I noticed from the website of Gold & Green (the brand I bought) that they link to the UK ๐Ÿ˜Š Let me know if you do try this out! Ps. please be aware pulled oats taste of very little unless you simmer in a sauce. I tasted them plain first๐Ÿ˜‰

  1. Your photo does actually look really delicious! Where in the supermarket would we find the pulled oats? Is it a grain, in a tin…? What am I looking for? Would an Indian supermarket have it? I’m hungry now… ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Thank you Wendy ๐Ÿ˜Š I found them in the chilled section at my supermarket by all the other vegan proteins like tofu & Quorn etc. They look like brown little shredded lumps of meat in a plastic container – quite messy looking and unattractive ๐Ÿ˜‚ Not sure it would be in an Indian supermarket, as it’s a Nordic product (I think actually invented in Finland). Since you’re pretty far away in New Zealand, could be tricky to source, but perhaps you could substitute jackfruit, as it too has a ‘shreddy’ texture? I’ve actually used tinned jackfruit in an indian curry instead of chicken on a couple of occasions and it’s turned out well. Let me know if you try this out or if you find pulled oats! ๐Ÿ˜˜

I’m not 100% vegetarian/vegan either, just trying to reduce animal products especially after my husband became very ill last year and was advised by his specialist Dr to eat more plant-based, as it’s more anti-inflammatory. I do eat fish and some chicken as well as occasional game though. I also find I need some animal products to stay healthy, so just focus on quality. I think it’s all about balance ๐Ÿ˜‰

      2. I agree. I eat organic chicken and lamb to help my iron levels. Fish if it’s been caught that day. I’m amine intolerant, so that restricts me. But no dairy. I just get desperate if I don’t eat meat. My body seems to need the animal protein.

      3. Organic is the way to go or even wild ๐Ÿ˜Š I’m the same, as if I only eat veggies I get anaemic, also my B12 plummets. Thankfully I’m fine with fish and that addresses these issues. You can easily make this recipe with beef, as that’s what Rendang usually has, just simmer for much longer (at least 1 hr) until the meat starts falling apart. If I eat beef occasionally I aim to buy grass-fed organic, as the Omega fatty acids profile is better ๐Ÿ˜Š

Let me know if you try this recipe out, as the pulled-oats are so meat-like in texture and the taste absorbed from the curry it simmers in, that I think it could persuade meat-eaters!๐Ÿ˜‰ I’d been waiting for pulled oats here in NL too, as I’ve had some really tasty vegan meals from it in Helsinki when visiting.๐Ÿ˜ Xx
